Among the grantees under the Balik Scientists Program (BSP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently presented at the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) by Nimfa B. Ogena, associate Dean, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Diliman recently were Shirley K. Chavez, Information Communication Technology Management; Dr. Ricalondo L. Carino, Computer Science; and Dr. Francisco S. Chung, Jr., Pathology and Molecular Medicine.
All of them are under the long term program of BSP, 90 days for Dr. Carino, from April 9, 2010 – July 5, 2010; March 1, 2010 – February 28, 2012 for Chavez, both with UPLB as host institution and March 11, 2009 – March 10, 2010 for Dr. Chung with UP Manila as host institution.
Each has to accomplish the following as BSP awardee; Chavez, stakeholder engagement plan, change management plan; staff development plan; infrastructure/security/network plan; updated UPLB-ITC strategic plan; establishment of competency center for IT disciplines; standard complaint with international governing body; and IT vendor partnership guidelines.
For Dr. Carino, improve the student registration process of the university by developing or revising the current software used; and develop software materials and conduct user’s training. The software that will be developed will be made available to other interested academic institutions.
For Dr. Chung, contribute in the area of research (therapeutic vaccines in cancer research, diagnostic infectious disease); train and improve graduate students in conducting research; produce international quality research peer review publication; bring in biochemical techniques such as flow cytometry, in vivo imaging; and submit research proposal to PEER health program, NIH and PCHRD.
DOST expects to bring home more scientists from abroad to help the country share with the development in science and technology in their fields of expertise for a faster development and adaptation of said advancement in science and technology.
